Bye bye sippy cup - hello big boy room!

This last week has been quite a week of transitions for us.  We decided it was time for Greg to stop taking a sippy cup with him to bed every night and every nap time.  He used the soft spout sippy cups almost as a pacifier.  They were very comforting to him and he relied on them to soothe himself to sleep.  It was hard for us to take them away, but he's starting to get quite an overbite and we didn't want him to mess up his teeth any further so the sippy cups were banished!  We're also still hoping to start potty training soon, so water in bed would be detrimental to that process as well.

At first, we explained the situation to Greg, telling him that big boys didn't need to take water to bed with them and that he could still have his blankie and teddy bear. He seemed to understand and even told us he didn't need it.  But after being in bed for a little while, he began crying for it.  Every nap time and bed time for a few days, he'd ask and sometimes beg for his "other water" (which is how he referred to the soft spout sippy cups).  He even began climbing out of his crib and coming into our room in the middle of the night (2 am, 3 am, 4 am....not cool).

Since we were already in the midst of a big transition for him, removing the sippy cups, I thought I'd try another.  Two days ago, I asked him if he wanted to take a nap in his big boy room.  He said yes, so I put the little bed rail on and moved his pillow, teddy and all his blankies to the twin bed in his big boy room.  I sat on the end of the bed, read him a story and told him it was time to close his eyes and go night night.  He laid there and talked quietly for awhile but then fell asleep and took a good nap!  We repeated that nap routine yesterday and he did great again.

So last night, for the 1st time ever, Greg slept in his big boy bed and did great all night!  He's almost 2 1/2 now and he seems to be done with his crib.  One more step away from being my baby =(  I'm happy he's doing good and adjusting to his new room though.  Now, if he would only use the potty....that's our next big obstacle!

  1. So sad in a way that he is getting so big! I am not looking forward to the big bed transition! Glad Greg has done well with it so far! We have the opposite problems with sippy cups...Asher wont use them and only wants to nurse or drink out of our camelback water bottles! I am trying to transition to a bit more water bottle/cups use then nursing, but it isn't working so far....He is such a boob guy :)
