I went in this morning for the routine cyst check. Everyone that is going to start Clomid has to get an ultrasound on cycle day 3 to check for ovarian cysts. Naively, I thought nothing of this appointment as I've had about a million ultrasounds and have never had any trouble with my ovaries. Well, of course, they found a cyst on my right ovary. Thankfully it only measured 1.4 mm which still allows me to go on Clomid. Measurements of 1.5 mm and above are trouble so I barely made it! Why would I ever believe I'd go in and have a "normal" report? Just once I would love to have them say "Everything looks great. It looks normal so let's move on to the next step." Someday maybe.
So I got dressed, got my prescription for Clomid, headed home to get Greg from the Kingley's house and then went straight to Walgreens. I dropped off the prescription and Greg and I headed across the street to grab some breakfast while we waited the 30 minutes for the prescription to be filled. We sat in the Burger King parking lot sharing some breakfast and watched a steady stream of men rushing in and out of the Hallmark store, no doubt picking up last minute Mother's Day gifts. It was kind of amusing watching them.
After about 35 minutes we headed back across the street to Walgreens and pulled up in the drive through to get my Clomid. The pharmacy tech, who by the way was completely void of any personality and only maybe had half a brain, flatly explained that they didn't have any name brand Clomid and that he'd have to call around to other area Walgreens to see if he could track some down. "Fine," I say as I wait in the car. Looking through the window into the store, I see it's completely desserted, not a soul in sight, and wondered why he couldn't have done this 30 minutes ago. I glanced in the rear view mirror at my increasingly restless 2 year old and sighed. After several minutes, the pharmacy tech picks up the phone and tells me that he's found another Walgreens that has it in stock, but the cost would be $539!!!!!!! WHAT?!?!?!? I'm only supposed to take the pills on cycle days 5 - 9....that is 5 pills! He explained that the insurance wouldn't cover any of it and that was the cash price. Completely shocked an bewildered, I told him to go ahead and transfer the prescription to the other Walgreens and that I'd head over there to pick it up.
I pulled out of the drive through into a parking space and started dialing. First, I sent Andrew a text and told him to call me as soon as his soccer game was over. Then I tried calling my doctor's office to see if there had been some kind of a mistake or if maybe I could take a generic instead of the name brand drug. No luck - it's a Saturday morning and I'd have to go through the answering service and have someone paged. Ugh. So, without having talked to Andrew or come up with a solution on my own, I tucked my tail between my legs and went home feeling utterly defeated.
$539 for 5 pills....that's more than $100 per pill. What the heck?
I got home and Greg and I headed outside to play in the back yard. We blew bubbles, played soccer and had a great time playing in the glorious sunny weather. I was started to feel better and more calm so I decided to pick up the phone and call the other Walgreens store that was holding my prescription. I asked to speak to a pharmacist (aka someone with half a clue) and finally got some good news! The doctor's office had written up the prescription wrong. They wrote the Rx for 50 pills @ 50 mg. It was supposed to be 5 pills @ 50 mg! The pharmacist noticed the alarmingly high quantity of pills (equivilant to a 10 month supply) and the staggering price tag for the prescription and called the doctor's office to verify. Luckily, if you're a pharmacist, I guess they pick up the phone when you call =)
So we got it all worked out and the new grand total was $58.99 for the 5 pills. Whew! So, there was yet another mistake by the nursing staff at the doctor's office and another near heart attack for me. Luckily, thanks to the pharmacist at the new Walgreens, the crisis was averted.
So now I just need to pray that nothing more comes of that cyst on my right ovary and that it doesn't cause and future complications or problems. I start the Clomid on Monday 5/10 and go in for another ultrasound next Saturday morning. Then I guess we'll see how my follicles are doing and go from there.
Geez Louise! Am I a stress case or what?
